Course Description: Liberationist Theological Leonardo Boff wrote, “It’s not enough to want to do good. One must actually do good.” Research has shown that volunteering - or “doing good” - offers significant health benefits, provides a sense of purpose, teaches valuable life skills, and nurtures new and existing relationships - all highly important aspects of wellness. This course will consist of a combination of classes and hands-on opportunities to volunteer in the community. Classes will introduce students to various religious and philosophical understandings of the importance of being of service (including a discussion about problematic beliefs about service). Students in the class will also hear from fellow Dartmouth students about their volunteer experiences as well as local social service staff about the purpose and benefits of volunteering. Students in the class will then plan and implement how they would like to be of service (from volunteer opportunities in the Upper Valley to exploring what it means to be of service to their friends and family). PLEASE NOTE: Weeks 4 and 5 may meet on a day other than the regular course time in order to take part in service activities.

Course Description: This 8-week course is designed to help students strengthen their ability to perform their best in important moments at and beyond Dartmouth. This class introduces students to performance psychology (or mental performance), the study and application of psychological principles of human performance to help people consistently perform in the upper ranges of their capabilities and more thoroughly enjoy the process (Portenga et al., 2017). This course is grounded in evidence-based frameworks and research from sport, performance, and positive psychology. A guiding tenet of this course is that sustained excellence in any domain is supported by, not at the expense of, holistic well-being.

Course Description: This class is designed for students exploring or pursuing a “pre-health” path at Dartmouth, whether that be in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, or other health profession. Designed to enhance the pre-health experience, the course empowers students with practical guidance for navigating the many facets of the pre-health journey while helping to reduce stress and uncertainty about the road ahead. Topics will include understanding and personalizing your pre-health D-Plan, developing effective study strategies, finding research, clinical, and service experiences, and getting an early glimpse into what the future application process actually looks like. The knowledge and tools you gain will help you determine whether a pre-health path is right for you and understand what it takes to become a strong future applicant. Throughout the term, we’ll also introduce simple practices to help reduce stress, support your wellbeing, and make the journey more sustainable. To make the course accessible and manageable, it is offered in a condensed format: students meet twice a week for six weeks. To earn PE/WE credit, students must attend 10 sessions. Led by HPP Advisor Sarah Berger, the course will also feature guest speakers from other Dartmouth campus resources who will share their expertise and perspectives.
