Faculty/Staff Course Sponsors

All undergraduate student-instructed and/or proposed courses are required to partner with a Dartmouth College-employed faculty or staff member with a valid NetID, known as a Faculty/Staff Sponsor. The role of this individual is to ensure accountability for course maintenance if a student instructor/manager is unreachable. The sponsor will receive all communication regarding scheduling a student-instructed course. The student instructor/manager is responsible for securing a sponsor; the Wellness Education Subcommittee will verify the sponsor upon the start of each term.

The sponsorship role is separate from a possible advising role (required for groups under COSO); the sponsorship role may be filled by someone other than an advisor.

The faculty/staff sponsor must agree to serve as a point of contact for the following:

  • Attendance: Faculty/staff sponsors will be responsible for sending the student instructor/manager the QR code for attendance through CourseKey/Portico. The sponsor will have access to CourseKey/Portico and will have the authority to view and/or edit any/all attendance records for the course. The sponsor will need to make any attendance changes as needed throughout the term.
  • Canvas: The sponsor will need to request a Canvas site on behalf of the student instructor/manager if the course requires one.
  • Student Success: Occasionally, Undergraduate Deans and other advisory staff contact an instructor to obtain information about a student’s participation and progress in a course. The faculty/staff sponsor must be willing to provide the relevant information.

All current student-led courses must verify and name their sponsor when confirming a course for an upcoming term. The student instructor/manager must reconfirm their sponsor every term that they offer a course.
